Before You Cast a Spell

Before You Cast a Spell

The following article was written by Amanda Godfrey. Amanda is a White Witch who has been studying and practising witchcraft for over 25 years. Previously a member of a Coven Amanda now practises as a solitary Witch and leads Mystical Dragon’s Open Circles. Amanda enjoys sharing her Craft with others and has written and trained courses on Witchcraft for 15 years.

One of the biggest aspects of Witchcraft that I get asked questions about is spells.  It is not necessarily the most important part of the Craft, but it is certainly the part that seems to intrigue people the most! Spells are an effective tool you can use in your manifesting. It is an activity that prolongs or changes a state of being through direct manipulation of the Universal energy (also called Creative life-force). Spells are usually done through the use of spoken words accompanied by candles, crystals, incense, herbs, amulets, and/or other items.

For example, let us say that we are working a healing spell.  The spell may include spoken words to bring about healing, a blue candle, a fluorite crystal, some Lavender (herb), sandalwood incense, and an amulet that has been blessed for healing.  The words and the items used usually all relate directly to the desired intent – in this case they all relate to healing.

A spell can be considered a very “hands on” approach to a situation. How many tools you use or how complex the spell is doesn’t really matter. It is you and your focused intent that makes the biggest shift. But many of us do not have the faith in ourselves to manifest simply by our intent alone. So we use the tools in our spell to help us focus and add energy to our work.

How long for my spells to manifest?

There is no hard and fast rule as to how long it takes for a spell to manifest. The rule of thumb I have read in my own research is that small goals can take less time for spells to manifest and you can often see results within one Moon cycle (from Full Moon to Full Moon, approx thirty days). And then larger goals, for instance manifesting something like a car or house, creating a promotion at work, etc, may take longer (months or even a year).

Personally, I believe that the amount of time it takes for a spell to manifest more depends on the person casting the spell – how strong your intent is, how focused you were through out the spell or ritual, how much doubt and fear you put into your goal, how much you believe you deserve what you have requested, etc. I also believe that Universe has a say about what we are manifesting too – are all the pieces lined up ready to fall into place to create what you are asking for? Is it for your highest good that this request occurs? These things will have an influence over how fast or slow the manifesting occurs.

Why doesn’t magick always work?

Every skilled magickal individual has experienced failure.  It is through failure that we learn and grow. Don’t think that because you are happily “zapping away” that all will turn out exactly the way you hope and expect.  Remember, that if we are not careful and are not specific with our requests, you may end up with a result you weren’t expecting. This is not necessarily “failure” however, and shouldn’t cause you to lose confidence in your abilities.

Sometimes Universe has actually tried to give you your request, but you have blinkers on and haven’t seen it. There has been many times I have taught classes where we have done a money spell and I have had some students return later saying the money they wanted didn’t come. However when I ask questions of them like “did you get offered any over time or extra shifts at work?” the answer is almost always YES. So more money did try to come in, but they said NO to the opportunities. And if you say “no” too many times when Universe is trying to bring you what you have requested, then it stops trying. This doesn’t mean you have to say yes to every way Universe tries to bring you what you have asked for, but it does mean you should say yes to more opportunities that present than you say no to!

When doing your magickal workings, your focus should be on the end result you want to create, not all the steps you think will get you there. So when doing your spell see yourself happy and healthy and everything all working out, but don’t focus on what you need to do to get to that end result – this is where you need to place your trust in the Universe to know what you need and the best way to achieve it. Often Universe will find an easier way that you didn’t think of to create your request. So request what you need and then flow with the opportunities and guidance that comes afterwards.

Remember that Universe (Spirit) knows better than we do about what will be right for us in any situation.  Sometimes Universe takes a different route to protect us, and other times Universe knows that we have bigger missions, larger goals, and more important activities that we should be doing and so granting us this request may merely move us away from where we need to be.

Some things to remember

When performing any kind of magick, there are some things you should remember before you go ahead and cast your spell.

Always remember the ‘Wiccan Rede’ when deciding whether you will cast a spell

Witches believe in what some call the law of karma, where one’s actions will determine one’s future (what goes around comes around). This is covered in what is commonly known as the ‘Wiccan Rede’ or ‘Wiccan Law’ which states:

Bide the Wiccan Law ye must,
In perfect Love and perfect Trust.
Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill:
An' ye harm none, do what ye will.
What ye send forth comes back to thee
So ever mind the law of three,
Follow this with mind and heart,
Merry ye meet and merry ye part.

The term “harm none” includes all living beings in the world, the planet itself, and of course YOU.  So to follow this code of ethics you need to look at what you intend to do and decide if any of your words, thoughts or deeds will harm or manipulate anyone in anyway.  Remember that YOU are responsible for everything that you do and there is no spell, amulet or dis-belief in the law that will protect you from this powerful Universal law. Everything you send out always comes back to you in some way. You determine if it is positive or negative.

Casting spells on others

Whenever you decide to work any type of magick it is important to remember that you should not cast spells on people that will make them do things against their free will.  For this reason, if you are looking to say, attract a loving partner into your life, it is always a good idea to list the attributes you are looking for in a partner, rather than name a specific person you want to attract.  If there is someone in your life whom you really admire, write down all the qualities that make them attractive to you and ask to manifest someone with those qualities. Doing spells that work against someone’s free will breaks the Wiccan Rede and therefore creates consequences for you down the track. I have seen Love spells done that end up with terrible results.

Causing punishment

It’s not your job to be handing out punishment or “hurrying up karma”. No matter how bad the person is or how certain you are of what they may have done. The Universe will deal with them when the time is right, and casting spells on them will only see to it that you end up entangled in their fate. If in doubt, always look at what you can do to help heal yourself in this situation, rather than focusing on the other person or people involved.  It is far better to cast a spell releasing anger for yourself than throwing angry energy at someone and having to deal with the consequences down the track!

Multiple spells

The best idea when working spells is to focus on ONE spell at a time.  There is no point having five candles burning down, all with different reasons and trying to do different things in the same night.  You won’t have put as much energy and heart into each one as you would have if you had focused on a single candle spell.  The energy, emotion and concentration are what make magick work.  The more you can pour into each spell, the more powerful that spell will be. So if you have a list of things you would like to work on – prioritise that list and work on one thing at a time. You will be glad you did!

Seek Permission

If you are doing spells for other people (something like a healing spell), it is a good idea to ask their permission. Obviously if they have asked you to do the spell for them you have their permission. If you don’t feel you ask them directly, you could always tune in with meditation and ask their higher self for permission to work the magick. Sometimes, for reasons not obvious to us, the person will not accept healing or positive energy from us—and it is their right (free will) to refuse help!

Seek their Assistance

While you can certainly do spells on another person’s behalf, for best results I recommend getting them involved in the spell in some way. The person wanting the spell done will always have a stronger emotional connection to the outcome than you will have (you can want it for them, but they will REALLY want it for themselves!). And a stronger emotional connection always makes for stronger outcomes in your spell work.

I hope that this article has helped to give you more confidence in going about your spell work in future. And perhaps even given you some extra things to think about that you maybe hadn’t considered before. I teach about Witchcraft including different types of magick work in my workshops I hold through out the year. And Mystical Dragon even offers a complete ‘Embracing Witchcraft’ program designed to give you confidence and understanding on all aspects of being a Witch. I encourage you to take a look at our website for more on this, plus our online Book of Shadows, more articles and our newsletter which keeps you updated with upcoming Moon phases, workshops and spell advice. Brightest blessings xx
