It is generally believed the basis of this book, A Buddhist Bible, was originally compiled early in the first century. The earliest date connected with it is the Chinese translation in about 420AD. Since then, there have been three other translations into Chinese and one Tibetan.
Although other sutras, Sacred texts, have been more commonly studied, none have been more influential in coming to terms with the doctrines of Mahayan Buddhism and in bringing the general adoption of Buddhism to the Orient. Known as the Lankavatara Sutra, it is one of the most important sutras of Mahayana Buddhism.
According to tradition, these are the actual words of the Buddha as he entered Sri Lanka. This sutra figured prominently in the development of Chinese, Tibetan and Japanese Buddhism.
