The eight Sabbats of a Witch represent the turning of the Wheel of the year and honour not only the current season but also the stages in the eternal life cycle of the Goddess and God. Lughnasadh, or Lammas, is a Witches' Sabbat that originates from the Celtic Sun God, Lugh, who presided over the first grain harvest of the year. It is the time of the first harvest as the plants of Spring wither and drop their fruit. As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, the God is considered to gradually lose his strength. In the cyclical year of the Witch, Lammas marks the beginning of the decline of the powers of the God as the days grow shorter and Winter approaches.
