Sphinx Black and Gold Statue

Description

This Sphinx Black and Gold Statue has the head of a human and the body of a lion. The Sphinx is also known as 'Shesep Ankh'.  The Lion being the symbol of supreme power and guardian of the eastern and western gates of the underworld. The Sphinx was thought to represent the pharaoh and the earthly reincarnation of the God Atum.

The sphinx is seen as a guardian, and so statues of them are often found at the entrances to temples.
